The Man With The Golden Belt

The title for the next FTD release (soundboard recording from January 1971 in Las Vegas, see below), will be "The Man With The Golden Belt". The release date will be April 1, 2004.

Follow That Dream Records is currently examining the five shows they have for the exact content of the CD and may choose a show that has already been out on bootleg and add the best from the other shows.

There’s quite a lot of distortion on some of these recordings making their options somewhat limited. The general idea behind FTD’s release of soundboards is to document as many hotel engagements and tours as possible.

Note:
We did some research on the soundboards that are in the posession of BMG and put some
tape legends online.

Elvis Recorded Live On Stage in Memphis Reissued On FTD

Part of Follow That Dream Records’ mission, along with their regular quarterly releases of concert soundboards, alternate material from recording sessions and other special material is to reissue Elvis movie soundtrack albums and classic Elvis albums that have been deleted from the regular RCA Records label catalog and are no longer widely available.

The next Classic Albums reissue is the 1974 album Elvis Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis. It will include the songs that were left out of the original album, Consequently, the whole show has to be remixed.

The package will be in the 7” format including a booklet with pictures and information about the show.

Source: EPE

Note:
This will not be the same as the Fort Baxter release "Steamroller Blues", because that album was compiled from two different sources. Part of the CD came from an acetate and the other part came from the official (Japanese) CD.
Hopefully FTD finds out how to remaster a live concert properly before they release this CD.

Elvis Ultimate Gospel

"Elvis Ultimate Gospel," is the title of  an new BMG compilation of  gospel hits. Planned releasedate is March 23.
This release will feate tracks like How Great Thou Art,  Crying in the Chapel and Amazing Grace.

Note:
At this moment we don't know the tracklisting, so it wouldn't be fair to complaint, we're getting another gospel compilation so soon after Christmas Peace. Let's hope it will be better remastered than Christmas Peace.

Bits and pieces

Welcome Home Elvis

A new DVD will be released on February 10. The source for this DVD seems to be the original broadcast tapes. Let's hope it is true this time. The last time the Timex Show was released on DVD, it was even worse in quality than the videotape.

In 1957 Timex sponsored a series of TV Variety Show Specials starring Frank Sinatra broadcast on the ABC Television Network. The last in the series taped on 12th May 1960 in Miami, was perhaps the best of all, featuring Elvis Presley, upon completion of his National Service.
This video, remastered from the archive tape of the broadcast programme, is the original show in its entirety including the sponsors promotional segments.
Whilst the quality of reproduction does not meet modern technological standards, it is a rare record of two of the most popular performers of the Twentieth Century performing together.

Elvis Presley Documentary in the Works

RALEIGH, N.C. - Filmmaker Ken Vrana will mark the 69th anniversary of Elvis Presley's birth Thursday by working on his own "Tribute." Vrana has traveled 250,000 miles over the past 3 1/2 years to collect 570 interviews for a documentary about Presley, who died at his Graceland home in Memphis, Tenn., on Aug. 16, 1977. As fans mark Presley's birthday, Vrana will be editing his footage.

"Officially, we've completed the interviews," Vrana says. "Unofficially, I still have a wish list of about a dozen `big' people like Paul McCartney I'll continue to chase, to insert later if I can get them." He plans to release "Tribute" as an 11-hour DVD box set, with a companion coffee-table book. It's not a profit-making venture: Vrana has spent $280,000 on the project so far and says any proceeds will go to charity. Vrana wasn't much of an Elvis aficionado when he was working on another documentary called "The Fans," about devoted followers of NASCAR, professional wrestling, college basketball and Presley.

But the Elvis fans' stories stood out as worthy of their own film. The cast of interview subjects eventually stretched well beyond fans, from Presley's old girlfriends and bandmates to other music legends such as Bill Monroe and B.B. King. "Tribute" is being financed by Vrana's wife, Lisa, who is a marketing specialist - and also his film editor.

"My wife was saying, `If we don't sell this, it will be one of the most expensive home movies of all time,'" he said.

 Jailhouse Rock - The Musical.

This musical will start on April 19th at the Piccadilly Theatre in London.
More information on the musical here.

This is Elvis out on VCD.

The cover says it's the long version we're getting here. containing 40 minutes more material than the original version.
We haven't got this VCD yet,
so let's wait and see. It would be great if this VCD combines all the material from all "This is Elvis" versions that are available. The German version eg had some different shots.
As usual this is a double VCD, released in India. Normally these type of VCDs are not the best in sound and picture quality.

A review will follow as soon as we have this VCD.

FTD release "So High" will be replaced.

Due to an error on the song "So High", Ernst Jörgensen announced that all copies of this CD will be replaced in April. Those who bought the CD must keep the digipack and will get a new CD, the new CD will be made available with the Jan. 1971 concert that FTD will release (see below).

This is a great move by a great Elvisfan, Ernst Jörgensen. Despite all critic, he's still there for us !!!
Thanks a lot Ernst !!!

Some thoughts on the upcoming April FTD-release

As Ernst Jörgensen announced, FTD will release a soundboard recording from January 1971 on April 1st 2004.
Which show could this be?

According to the first edition of Joe Tunzi’s session book, RCA has several live shows from January 1971 in
their faults
, but not all.
The shows they have on reel are:

January 26 1971 show 1                       January 27 1971 show 1                         January 28 1971 show 1
January 2
6 1971 show 2                       January 27 1971 show 2                         January 28 1971 show 2

Strange thing is, that Elvis only did one show on January 26. But there are two reels with show 1 and show 2.
As it was very common in those days to tape a show on 2 reels, I think this is what happened.

When you look at the tape legends, you can see that the opening show is recorded on backside of the same reel as the midnight show from January 27th . You can also see on the tape legend that the reel is a disaster and that the recording was stopped during Make The World Go Away. (The midnight show was released on the Diamond Anniversary album “All Things Are Possible” also included on that cd are a few bonus songs from the opening show on the original release of this cd you can also hear part of Make The World Go Away)

In my opinion the tape broke during Make The World Go Away and another tape was used to record the rest of the show. The next day they fixed the tape and used it to record the midnight show.
That’s why I think the opening show was recorded on 2 tapes as listed in the book of Tunzi.

On the latest Fort Baxter cd
Thank You Very Much you’ll find 2 songs (Make The World Go Away and  Something) listed as being from the January 26 opening show.
In fact these songs were recorded from the dinner show from the 27th.

According to the listing of Tunzi there are 2 shows recorded on the 27th and 2 shows from the 28th .
On the bootleg release Lean Mean And Kicking Butt (Fort Baxter) we get one of the shows from the 28th .

Out of nowhere, we suddenly got a soundboard from the January 29 dinner show on the Snowbird cd (2001).  Allthough this show was not listed in the RCA vaults, it still was known by some Elvis fans because an audience recording exists. Highlight of this show is an ultra rare version of the song Snowbird which Elvis only performed in this show and on Febr 19 and 22 1971.

It is also possible FTD will come with the dinner show from January 30 (you never know). During this show,
after introduction of Joe Guercio, Elvis announces
Also Sprach Zarathustra.

Conclusion: It’s not likely that FTD brings out an already released show (At least I hope they don’t)
My guess is the opening show from January 26, the dinner show from January 27
or the dinner show from January 28.

News on comming RCA releases in 2004

Ernst Jorgensen gave the following news during a luncheon with Bull Burke and some fans:

- By the end of 2004 or begin 2005 a new SUN BOOK will be released
- There will be a follow-up album to the ELVIS NUMBER 1 and SECOND TO NONE albums.

- There will be a new gospel-set
- The announced SUN release will contain 19 masters, no surprises but in better sound

- The April 1 FTD release will contain a soundboard recorded in Las Vegas January, 1971.
- In may the soundtracks PARADISE HAWAIIAN STYLE, SPIN OUT and DOUBLE TROUBLE will be released on the FTD label.

And the hottest news is the remixed and complete release of Elvis' March 20, 1974, Memphis concert, probably on the FTD label. All the missing songs and some talking of Elvis will be on this album, including the false start of Help Me. The concert has been released  complete on FORT BAXTER's Steamroller blues, but half of this disc came from the original RCA release As Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis and the 'new' half of an acetate. The difference in sound and the missing of the dubbed in applause (which is a very annoying thing on the original album anyway) on the unreleased tracks spoiled some of the listening pleasure.
Hope FTD delivers the best live-album ever with this release..!

Great and enough stuff to look forward to.

A small overview

To start our news-section we decided to put the spotlight on some announced releases for 2004 from which we think are great items to look out for.

First of all The Elvis Presley Estate brings out somewhere in the middle of 2004 the revamped and digitally remastered tv-specials
ALOHA FROM HAWAII and the NBC TV-special. On the www.elvis.com website you can read everything about it, and it really sounds promising.

Another DVD with a great impact will be BEHIND THE IMAGE vol 2. Believing the ad's this one must even have better and more spectaculair 8-mm footage than volume 1. This one will come out in the first months of 2004.

Books to look out for in our opinion are the long awaited Joe Tunzi's ELVIS SESSIONS III, Praytome's BORN TO ROCK, John Wilkinson's book MEMORIES and a book called RAISED ON ROCK.

Further book/cd news is that Ernst Jorgensen is working on a new book focussing on the years 1954-1955. All the sun-recordings will be collected on 3 compact discs which will make this a collectors dream.

Among the announced cd's we think Triangle's THE HAMPTON ROADS CONCERT is the most  promising as being the only soundboard and it will also contain a dvd highlighting the Hampton Roads Concert.  A lot of audience recordings have been announced, and we think the best of these will be AMERICA'S OWN from Ampex plus the Chech cd's A BRIGHT MIDNIGHT WITH ELVIS and A DINNER BELL IN VEGAS bearing 2 concerts from Elvis highly aclaimed third Las Vegas season, august 1970

What else to expect: Two audience recordings -
When the blue moon turns to gold again / Seattle April 23, 1973 and Live at the HIC / Honolulu November 18, 1972.

The documentary dvd
200 CADILLACS from Image Entertainment, out in January 2004, and from the same firm comes the announcement of the FRANK SINATRA SHOW: WELCOME HOME ELVIS for release in February, 2004. And offcourse we hope the fantastic FTD-label will keep on suprising us with their great releases, and that some new quality soundboards will appear on the import-market. The best wishes for 2004 from the ELVISbay team, and lets hope this will be a wonderful Elvis year..!
